THE MUSLIM COMMUNITY at Ohio Wesleyan University is an integral part of the strong interfaith tradition at OWU. This fact recently became more explicit during the renovation of Peale Chapel. One of the focal points of Peale Chapel is the mihrah (a traditional niche in that wall of a mosque that is closest to Mecca: it indicates the direction toward which to pray). Also prominently displayed among interfaith artifacts along the south wall of Peale Chapel is a family Qur’an and storage box given by a Pakistani family to express their gratitude for the spiritual care of their three sons, all of whom graduated from OWU in the 1990’s.

As the Chaplain’s staff, we seek to continue that level of care and support for every Muslim student at Ohio Wesleyan. Chaplain Powers provides counsel for Muslim students with personal or faith issues. In particular matters of aqeeda (belief) or Fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence), he assists students with appropriate referral and connection to an Imam in the greater Columbus, Ohio area.

Beyond spiritual support, Chaplain Powers also works closely with the student leaders and faculty/staff advisors of the OWU Muslim Student Association, including both programming and resource support for MSA sponsored events.

We know that it can sometimes be a challenge to live your particular faith in the midst of a predominantly Christian culture, yet we also know that you can find space to be yourself here in the midst of community. Whoever you are, whatever your faith perspective, you are welcome to the journey.
